Grant Overview
The goal of the Nevada Refugee School Impact Grant (RSIG) program is to assist newly arrived refugee children successfully transition to a new way of life in Nevada and specifically help them adjust to their new school, academic expectations and social environment. The RSIG program utilizes a three-tier approach to ensure the successful integration of refugee youth in our school district and community. It focuses on student services, parent engagement, and school support. The RSIG program is student-centered and addresses the students’ social, physiological, emotional and linguistic needs to promote their academic success.
Student Services
Newcomer refugee cultural and school orientation including information about behavior expectations, school rules and policies.
- Newcomer refugee needs assessment
- Credit retrieval and enrichment
- College and career counseling
- Tutoring and homework support
- Referral to appropriate educational supports, community agencies and wrap around services
- Assistance with clothing, backpacks, basic school related supplies and bus passes
- Mentoring programs
School Support
- Assistance during registration process
- Access to interpreters and translators in selected low-incidence languages
- Assistance with development of tutoring programs for refugee students
- Parent engagement workshops
- Professional development to promote understanding of refugee students’ specific needs
- Strategies to foster language and content development
- Curriculum and instructional supports including certified tutors in high need areas
Universal Declaration of Human Rights – Article 26.
(1) Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. Elementary education shall be compulsory. Technical and professional education shall be made generally available and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit.
(2) Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.
(3) Parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children.
